To make huge hoop earrings with quilling, all you need is a collection of round items from around the house. Bottles, cups, pens, markers, etc. You’ll want to choose objects that are cylinders and do not taper. For example, some cups are just like a cylinder, while others taper and have smaller bottoms and bigger tops. Those that taper are more difficult to wrap the paper around nicely. Choose the object you want for your large hoop and wrap paper around it. You’ll want to to wrap several layers around. The bigger the hoop, the more times you’ll want to wrap it so it will be sturdy. Around 8-10 layers is good, but you can do more if you’d like! Click here to read a post about making your quilled jewelry sturdy. Here is a selection of some of the circle objects I use for my jewelry:
Once it is dry I like to pin it to a corkboard (covered with plastic so it doesn’t stick) before making and gluing in the extra design pieces. This cork workboard
Once your design is complete, paint on a layer of the liquid sealer

And last but not least, here is the largest pair I have made so far! Again I used the metallic mica watercolors on these. Click here to learn how to use them.
Here you can see just how big these beauties are!
All of these earrings, except the rust colored pair, have been sold long ago. I don’t personally wear must that is quite this big, but I do really enjoy making them! Seeing all of these in one page I am feeling inspired to make more!
Sealant for the earrings
For those are wanting to make your own earrings, you’ll want to make sure they are sealed to be sturdy and water resistant before using them as jewelry. Click here to read all of the posts I have about sealant. OR if you want a quick answer and product names, I would suggest this:
- Start by using a liquid sealer that will soak into your earring and make it nice and stiff. I suggest Ceramcoat All Purpose Sealer
(click here to read a review post with tips about this sealer) - Finish with a topcoat to make your piece water resistant and sturdy. I recommend either PPA matte
, PPA gloss , or Diamond Glaze , though there are others that work well also.
